Music and learning an instrument are complicated enough without all the gobbledygook and my approach to teaching music has always been to use plain English. This is mainly because I am a self taught player myself and I have been able, over the decades, to form my own view of how music works and how it applies to the guitar.
Everything is explained thoroughly, so I’m able to learn to play the correct way. I’m happy that I use a friend’s methods to learn how to play the guitar. In one lesson, he’ll be explaining everything about modes. From what they are, how they are made, and how you can use them. The other main drawback is that tabs don’t explain fingering. The tabs will show you what frets to put your fingers on, but not what specific fingers to put on the frets. Could get confusing… but read on.
Some beginner books and videos will have you playing guitar instantly. One intermediate and advanced guitar lesson will give you interesting and usable ideas to enhance your playing. They are well produced, very comprehensive and also includes a pentatonic guitar lessons eBook to bolster the main guitar scales system. It is clearly less comprehensive than the top two courses, does not contain any videos, and costs slightly more than #2 finisher Jamorama, so it only wins our #3 spot – but if for some reason you are at odds with the top two courses – this would be a safe buy. They look just like the transcriptions that you can buy in a book at the store!
Unlike guitar books, DVDs, and traditional teaching methods, some provide a guitar teaching service and not just a one time product. They are constantly finding new instructors and filming new lessons.
They also have online guitar tablature software, an online guitar tablature player, guitar lessons, scales, chords, guitar arpeggios, chord progressions and much more can be found here! They’ll discuss how to play each line in detail and also practice it over a jam track. Smart inclusions are a chord and tuning dictionary and printable power tab scores. Best of all, it’s free and can be downloaded from some websites.
One site takes the nitty gritty approach – note by note, chord by chord, no stone left unturned. If you ever get frustrated when you see someone amazing playing ask them how long it took them to gain their skill. The CD ROM includes progression charts with chords and guitar audio examples. The charts will illustrate progressions in each major key, over 90 of them. All the tools you need are here – chords scales licks riffs equipment tips and songs. We’ve got songs in tab and standard notation.
