How much should I charge to give guitar lessons?

I am a high school student and I have been playing the guitar for about a year and I am pretty good at it. My neighbors down the street want to know how much I will charge to give their daughter lessons. I have never had lessons myself, but I know alot from online videos, music books, ect. And how long should they be for?

I agree with the general consensus that you’re not experienced enough to teach anyone at this point. One year is simply not enough time to develop your musical abilities to the point where you can successfully teach somebody else. Even if you are a prodigy or something, it is most likely that there are a number of holes in your knowledge and your ability to explain things.

Just because you can play doesn’t mean you can teach. Teaching requires understanding AND the ability to relate knowledge. If you’re going to do that, you need to be prepared to answer any questions you may be presented with, and you’re not ready for that.

You shouldn’t be teaching anyone guitar if you’ve only been playing for a year, especially if you’ve never even had lessons yourself. Tell those people to start her with a real teacher. Getting a student into the right habits early is the most important step in guitar playing, and you don’t want to be the one to mess it up.

I kind of agree with nitro, you’re definitely still a "student" yourself. It really takes more than a year to gain enough knowledge and practice to teach someone else, especially a beginner. They need more instruction than any other level of teaching! On the other hand if they are very insistent about you doing the teaching $20/half hour is too much, especially with your experience level. I teach at a private music school where we all have college degrees in our specialty. Trust me, you don’t make $20 per half hour until you’ve got a good 5+ yrs of actual teaching experience after your years of learning. The going rate for private lessons right now is around $10-$11 per half hour. Naturally, as you progress and gain more teaching experience those rates can fluctuate.
